American Gothic

An Outsider’s Dream Through a Distant Land

American Gothic is a painting, completed in 1930 by Grant Wood. It is one of the most recognisable images of 20th Century American art, and also one of the most copied. It’s meaning, however, remains inscrutable. Is it a parody or a celebration? In 2019 I traveled through two states, and , as the distances were long (at least by British standards) I drifted in and out of sleep. The impressions I gained of the places I saw have stayed with me, nagging at me. I have never been able to quite pin down what I thought of them. America remains, like the painting, inscrutable to me.
