Turner Sunsets and Brighton Beach Clubs (1816 – 1991)

The late 1980s felt like the end of an epoch. Everywhere you looked, old certainties were crumbling. At times, the only thing to do was to dance and forget. Difficult times come around with a grim regularity: 2016, 2008, 2001, 1987, 1983, 1979… few bring real change. When they do they beg parallels. So here’s one: 1988/91 – 1815/16. The eruption of Mount Tambora and the ensuing “Year Without a Summer”, thrown into the mix with beach clubs in Brighton, the collapse of The Wall and The Gulf War. Why not? We’re all one happy human family, after all.
