The towns and villages of the Dales area feature in many of the tales. From the little, and ancient, villages of Appletreewick, Burnsall and Kettlewell, to the more substantial market towns of Grassington, Skipton and Hawes, the tales look beneath the limestone and millstone grit walls and cobbled side streets to the heart of lives led and left behind by time.

On the edge of the Dales, the old mill towns of the Lancashire/Yorkshire border, are rich in stories – from the Romantic “Bronte” country of Haworth, to the more gritty post-industrial landscapes of Colne, Keighley and Barnoldswick. These, too, provide a context to many of the tales.
